Chief Harteau Responds to Recent Homicide – 10/19/15

Oct. 19, 2015 (MINNEAPOLIS) At approximately 4:45 pm, Minneapolis Police Officers from the 5th Precinct responded to a shots fired call near the intersection of Lake Street and Pleasant Avenue. When they arrived, they found an adult male who had died from a gunshot wound. There is not a suspect in custody at this time, but investigators believe the suspect and the victim knew each other.

“This community needs peace. We need people to put the guns down. These (recent) cases aren’t necessarily related but the common denominator is gun violence,” Chief Janeé Harteau said, as she was surrounded by community leaders and community members at the scene.

Just prior to the shooting call, a team of 5th Precinct Officers was ready to head back to the 3700 block of 1st Avenue South, where a man was shot and killed the day before. This would have been their second time engaging with residents in that particular area on Monday. The teams plan to continue this important work on Tuesday. They will also be out in the area surrounding Lake and Pleasant, to continue their community engagement work with home and business owners regarding this latest tragedy. Existing patrol resources will also be saturating both of these areas in the coming days.

 “Addressing gun violence is a priority for Mayor Hodges and me. We are looking at all of our resources right now. Many of our suspects in the shootings this year have lengthy criminal histories. They’re not first time offenders in the criminal justice system and we need to find ways to connect those dots, and try to predict and prevent shootings before the next one occurs,” Harteau concluded.

The Medical Examiner will provide the identity of the victim in the Lake Street and Pleasant Avenue case. The criminal case number is 15-391364.
