On March 22, 2016 at 2:10 am, a taxi cab driver was the victim of an armed robbery and carjacking on the 2500 block of Lake Street East. The cab was tracked via GPS and found to be abandoned in the area of the 2700 block of 30th Avenue South. The victim was interviewed and the car was processed forensically and was returned to the cab company.
At 4:55 am, an adult male reported that he stopped for a man standing in the street blocking traffic on Lake Street and Cedar Avenue South. The man in the street produced a gun, aimed it at the driver and ordered the victim out of his car. The victim rapidly accelerated away from the suspect and called 911.
Officers from MPD saturated the area and observed a male matching the description in the area of Lake Street East and Bloomington Avenue. Officers attempted contact with that individual who then fled on foot. Two officers pursued the suspect and took him, and the gun, into custody. The suspect was positively identified by the victim of the attempted carjacking that happened at 4:55 am.
It was thought that this suspect may also be involved in the robbery and carjacking of the cab driver earlier in the evening. Investigators looked into that possibility. The victim of the robbery and carjacking of the cab was able to identify the suspect in a photo line-up and has been linked to that crime.
Thanks for an alert citizen, a quick thinking police response, and good detective work, this suspect is in custody and has multiple Felony charges levied against him!
