On Friday, May 4th, at 11:30 p.m., Officer Cassman was off-duty at the Tempo Bar and Restaurant at 2027 East Franklin Avenue. After getting into an argument with another patron, which soon turned physical, the patron pulled a gun. Cassman also pulled his gun and they both fired. Cassman was hit twice; the other man was not hit. Another patron tried to revive Cassman with CPR, but he was dead on arrival at Hennepin County Medical Center. The suspect was taken into custody outside the bar.

Officer Cassman was 33 years old and had been an officer for 11 years. He was last stationed at the 6th precinct at 2639 Nicollet Avenue. His brother, Mark, also worked out of this precinct. Mark was also present when Officer Partridge was killed in 1976. In addition to his brother, Officer Cassman was survived by his mother, Mildred, and four sisters: Patricia Toensing, Carol Dalquist, Janice Kolisnyk, and Nancy Cassman, and friend, Linda Brown. His funeral was held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at 4100 Lyndale Avenue South on Wednesday, May 8th and he was buried in Lakewood Cemetery.
