Man Charged in Shooting that Killed One and Injured Another

August 18, 2016 (MINNEAPOLIS) The Minneapolis Police Department has arrested and charged Jamal Kareem Newell with 2nd Degree Murder, stemming from the shooting death of a male back on August 7, 2016 at the intersection of 35 Av N and Penn Av N. The shooting also injured a second adult male. Jamal Newell is currently being held at the Hennepin County Jail on $2,000,000.00 bail. Newell’s next court appearance is scheduled for August 19, 2016.

August 9, 2016 (MINNEAPOLIS) The adult male victim that had been previously listed in critical condition at North Memorial Hospital has died. The name of the victim, along with the cause and nature of his death will be released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.

August 07, 2016 (MINNEAPOLIS) Officers from the 4th Precinct responded to the intersection of Penn Av N and 35 Av N shortly after 4:30 pm today, regarding a ShotSpotter activation.

When officers arrived at the scene they located two adult males who had been shot, sitting inside of a parked vehicle. Officers administered first aid to the victims until North Memorial Ambulance arrived. Both the males were transported to North Memorial Hospital by ambulance. One adult male was taken to surgery and is listed in critical condition. The other male was treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Officers from the 4th Precinct will be in the area tonight, and the coming days speaking with our community members about this shooting. Our community is strongly encouraged to talk with our officers about this crime or any other concerns they may have.
