MPD Recruit Class 2016-3 just finished week 5 of their academy training.
The recruits spent most of their week completing an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course. The goal is to make sure they are prepared for any situation that may arise while they’re behind the wheel.
Topics covered include basic driving skills, proper driving procedures, and laws associated with driving an emergency vehicle. The recruits work on practical exercises like high speed driving, backing maneuvers, evasive maneuvers, and braking maneuvers.
They also go through radio-dispatched scenarios —in these scenarios, recruits have to respond to an evolving situation that is often high speed and high stress.
Anything that the officer might encounter on the street, we want them to encounter in a training.
