Almost exactly a year after he fatally shot his girlfriend and her daughter, a jury convicted Gonzalo Galvan in the murders, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Thursday.

The Hennepin County District Court jury took only a couple of hours before returning the verdict on the two first-degree murder charges late Tuesday afternoon.  Galvan, 51, will automatically be sentenced to life in prison at his Oct. 6 hearing.

Just after 5 p.m. on Sept. 25, 2015, Galvan called 911 from his home at 2205 10th Ave. S. to report that he had shot 48-year-old Eugenia Tallman and her 15-year-old daughter, Victoria Alvarez. Police arrived and discovered the two had been shot repeatedly and were dead. The couple’s seven-year-old son was unharmed but witnessed the shooting.

Galvan told police that they could find the murder weapon in a trash can in the house and that Tallman and Alvarez had cash in their backpacks. Tallman told Galvan she was leaving him and taking both children, according to the criminal complaint.
