Gas Station Robbery Suspect Arrested Thanks to Coordinated Effort

On Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 5:20 pm, Minneapolis Police responded to the SuperAmerica Gas Station located at 3300 block of University Avenue SE on a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred.  The lone suspect was described as a black male, approximately 6 feet, 1 inch high and had fired a shot into the ceiling.  The suspect fled on foot.

Unknown to the suspect, a citizen followed him for a few blocks and lost sight of him in the area of an MTC bus.  That citizen called 911 and reported the information.  Minneapolis PD worked closely with the MTC PD to ascertain if the suspect had gotten onto a bus.

MTC Police notified the MPD that the suspect appeared to be the sole occupant on a bus that was in the area of 27th Avenue SE near University Avenue SE.  MPD scrambled to get squads in position.  The bus driver was briefed as to what was happening and was told to pull his bus over and abandon it.  The bus driver pulled over, turned the bus off and walked away from it.  MPD Officers arrived as the suspect was walking off the bus.  The male party matched the description of the armed robbery suspect.

As officers confronted him, the suspect refused to follow commands and only responded by raising his hands and displayed his middle finger to the officers.

The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.  A loaded semi-automatic pistol and a plastic bag containing cash were recovered from the suspect.  He was booked into the Hennepin County Adult Detention Center on Probable Cause Aggravated Robbery.

This is MPD case number 16-024996.
