At the intersection of Glenwood and Irving Avenues North, a vehicle driving approximately 50 MPH hit Officer Ben J. Lehmann. According to witnesses, the suspect stopped his car, but then continued on and drove home. The suspect, Otto Nelson, 38, was held in jail. He stated that he was going 25-30 MPH when Lehman “ran in front of the car.”

Officer Lehman was 60 years old. He had been with the department for 27 years, having been hired on January 15th, 1909. His funeral was held on Wednesday, May 6th, at St. Anne’s Church at 26th and Russell Avenue. He was buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
