2 Year Old Dies After an Exchange of Gunfire

July 8, 2016 (MINNEAPOLIS) Shortly before 11:30 this morning, Minneapolis Police responded to a report of gun shots heard at the intersection of Penn Avenue North and Lowry Avenue North.

Once officers arrived on scene, they were notified that two victims with gunshot wounds were at North Memorial Medical Center. A 2 year old who was struck by gunfire died at the hospital while a 15 month old suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

The Minneapolis Police Department has 8 investigators working on this case. According to preliminary information gathered in the investigation, the incident appears to be the result of gunfire between individuals known to each other.

Investigators and officers continue to interview a number of people and are reviewing a great deal of video from the area. K-9 units were used at the scene to look for more evidence.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will release the identity of the victim as well as the nature and cause of death.

Members of the MPD Community Support Team were at the scene and the hospital to help people with their grief and facilitate dialogue. Officers will be providing extra community engagement in this area. People are strongly encouraged to interact with these officers and share any information they may have.
