MPD Statement Regarding Investigation into Officer Discharge of Weapon on November 19th

December 9, 2016 (MINNEAPOLIS) A Minneapolis Police Officer discharged his weapon once during the early morning hours of November 19th, striking the side of a vehicle. The MPD has sent this case to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office for review and the Department’s Internal Affairs Unit will also investigate.

Anytime an officer uses deadly force on duty, the Minneapolis Police Department proactively conducts an immediate, preliminary internal investigation to determine if the case needs to be forwarded to the County Attorney. The MPD takes these cases very seriously and the investigative process following an incident of this nature is thorough and robust.

Within 2 days of the incident, after looking further into the circumstances surrounding the discharge of the weapon, Police Chief Janeé Harteau met with the owner of the vehicle, reassuring him that the MPD understood his concerns and had launched an immediate investigation. Chief Harteau also promised that the Department would be as transparent as legally possible throughout the process.
