On Tuesday, December 4th a class of 25 Minneapolis Police Cadets (24-Minneapolis Police, 1 Minneapolis Park Police) graduated and were sworn in as Officers at St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church at 7:00 pm.
The class of graduates began their cadet class on March 19, 2018. The 38 weeks of training include 21 weeks of mandated skills training at Hennepin Technical College. The cadets earned 16 college credits while at HTC, and completed 17 weeks of training at the Minneapolis Police Academy.
The class is comprised of five former Community Service Officers, five Correctional Deputies or Officers, a Minneapolis Urban Scholar recipient, a Park and Recreational Coordinator with the parks department, an NCAA Division 1 wrestler, and an exterminator, just to name a few.
One member has a Master’s degree in Law Enforcement Administration, 19 have Bachelor’s Degrees in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Economics, Park and Rec. Management, and Child Development and Family Studies, among others.
The class performed 84 hours of volunteer community outreach and service while at the academy. They contributed to MPD’s success at the Battle of the Badges BBQ competition in September, and 4 cadets volunteered an additional 50 hours with the Police Activities League.
The class is comprised of four females and 21 males. Six of the cadets were born and raised in Minneapolis, one is still currently residing in Minneapolis. Six of the cadets have a military background, and five are multi-lingual (French, Mandingo, Su-Su, Spanish, Hmong).
