One in Custody After Shooting on Freeway
February 5, 2019 (MINNEAPOLIS) Today at 2:21 pm, the Minneapolis Police Department and the Minnesota State Patrol received 911 calls of a motor vehicle crash that occurred in the area of southbound I35 where it parallels I94 near Chicago Avenue. Additional calls stated that a male was outside of a car pointing a gun at a school bus. Subsequent callers advised that shots were being fired.
The Minnesota State Patrol arrived on the scene quickly and took the adult male suspect into custody and removed a weapon from him. The bus driver suffered gunshot wounds and was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center by ambulance with non-life-threatening wounds.
Preliminary information indicates that a school bus, which is a contracted service by the Minneapolis School District, and the suspect’s car made contact on the freeway. They both pulled to the shoulder and shots were fired into the bus by the suspect. Investigators are looking into what led up to the shooting.
There was one student on the bus at the time of the shooting who was seated in the back of the bus. The child was unhurt during this incident and has been safely reunited with family.
The suspect’s name will be released later this evening. The booking photo will be held for investigative purposes under Minnesota State Statute 13.82 subd 26 (b).
The Minneapolis Police Department will be the lead agency on this case. We thank the Minnesota State Patrol for their immediate response, taking the suspect into custody and securing the firearm before anyone else was hurt.
