MPD announces charges filed in 2016 shooting death of two-year-old

July 1, 2019 (MINNEAPOLIS) – Almost 3 years ago, MPD Officers were dispatched to a local hospital in response to a shooting of two children. The one-year-old survived her injuries, however, the two-year-old tragically died in the hospital.

The investigation determined that the victim’s father, Melvonte Peterson, was involved in this shooting, which occurred while both children were inside his vehicle. The individual charged in this case, Chris Welch, was driving the other vehicle involved.

“This case involved the most vulnerable in our community, and that’s our children,” said Chief Medaria Arradondo. “When children are shot and killed, our entire city mourns.”

“With the great work done by the police, the County Attorney’s Office has charged Chris Welch with one count of murder in the second degree with intent,” said Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman.
