Minneapolis Police Department Initiates Death Investigation

UPDATE – Death Investigation

January 3, 2021 (MINNEAPOLIS) This afternoon the Minneapolis Police Department was notified by the Medical Examiner’s Office that, in the course of the identification process, the victim in this case is an adult male, not a female.  All other information remains the same.

January 3, 2021 (MINNEAPOLIS) On Sunday at 12:18 pm, officers from the Minneapolis Park Police and the Minneapolis Police Departments responded to the homeless encampment on the 4900 block of South Minnehaha Park Drive to check the welfare of an adult female located inside one of the tents on site.

As officers arrived and numerous people fled on foot.  Officers located an adult female inside a tent whose body had experienced obvious trauma.  She was deceased.

Detectives and Crime Lab personnel responded to the scene and have initiated a death investigation.  The Minneapolis Police Department will be the primary investigative unit.

The Minneapolis Police Department will work with the Minneapolis Park Police and the Medical Examiner’s Office to find the nature and cause of death.  The Medical Examiner will release that information along with the identity of the decedent.

The GO # for this case is 21-001663.

It is believed that the people that fled on foot as officers arrived may have mistakenly believed the officers were there to assist in disbanding the encampment; however, the police response was not related to disbanding the encampment.

The MPD is asking that anyone with information call the Homicide Unit at 612-673-2941 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).  Tips may be submitted electronically at All Tips are anonymous and persons providing information leading to an arrest and conviction may be eligible for a financial reward.
